All affiliate bylaws (states and branches) must be updated to reflect the 2023 bylaws changes. Since open membership did not pass, the updates do not include any changes to membership requirements. Please review the Bylaws Guidance, which includes the model bylaws for your branch or state.
States and branches are required to change and submit their revised bylaws to AAUW National by June 30, 2026. Remember that AAUW’s branch and state boards can approve the required changes with a vote of the board – a full vote of the branch or state membership is not required to implement national-mandated changes to affiliate bylaws.
Please submit revised bylaws to connect@aauw.org and direct any questions to connect@aauw.org or aauwgovernance@aauw.org.
AAUW members have the right to bring any bylaws amendment to the member-led Governance Committee for review. The AAUW Board of Directors decides what is put on the ballot each year for member vote, based on the Governance Committee’s recommendations. The national staff does not control, dictate or direct ballot initiatives for member vote.
The AAUW membership could, at the recommendation of the Governance Committee and approval from the Board of Directors, vote on this issue in future years.
