Did you know that nearly two-thirds (62 percent) of college students experience sexual harassment at some point during college, yet only about 7 percent of the incidents are reported to a university employee? These are the just some of the findings from the AAUW Educational Foundation’s recent study, Drawing the Line: Sexual Harassment on Campus, which reflects how college students perceive, experience, and respond to sexual harassment. What motivates busy college students to add yet another activity to their already full schedules? For those who participated in the AAUW Campus Action Project this past year, it was sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is a problem on college campuses across the country, but little is being done to address it. So when the opportunity to participate in this program came along, CAP team members decided to take action. PLUS: Campus Action Project teams and outcomes It Starts With a Question Beginning in elementary school, I’ve been exposed to many instances of sexual harassment. I wasn’t aware of the magnitude of the problem until I was in high school. I thought little of the sexual gestures, comments, jokes, and physical contact I experienced. Harassment had become part of school life. It had become the norm. But the things I have witnessed and experienced would not have been acceptable during my parents’ school tenures. UN Millennium Development Goals The U.N. Millennium Development Goals aim to improve the lives of people in some of the poorest parts of the world. Eight goals range from increasing access to safe drinking water to reducing child mortality. Goal three is to "promote gender equality and empower women." The target of this goal is to "eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by 2005, and to all levels of education no later than 2015." PLUS: AAUW's international partnerships and programs How Do You Spend Your Thursday Morning? It’s not everyday that one gets to meet her elected congressional representatives. It’s even more rare that she has the chance to be a compelling activist every Thursday while Congress is in session. I’m lucky. Unlike most interns in Washington, D.C., who often spend their days making photocopies, I get to go to Capitol Hill and advocate for important issues every week. As a member of the AAUW Capitol Hill Lobby Corps, I have met with staffers and senators alike, pursuing policies that address women’s equity and other social justice initiatives. Helpful Hints for Applying to a Study Abroad Program If you are considering study abroad, the options are endless. One of the most difficult challenges is choosing the right program at the right time. Numerous study abroad programs are offered during fall and spring semesters, and additional opportunities are available during winter and summer breaks. How to Find a Mentor Looking for and establishing a relationship with a mentor may sound easy, but it takes a fair deal of effort for the mentor and the mentee. Mentoring is a process in which someone takes the time to work with an individual to help develop them in a personal or professional manner. Mentoring commonly covers academic goals and career aspirations or the interaction of the two. An Intern's Journey to Self-Discovery On Jan. 10, 2006, I embarked on a new stage in my life by starting my first internship at the American Association of University Women. I realize that many undergraduate students have had two or more internships by their junior year, however, I am traveling my own course, and this is my journey to self-discovery. |
