Register Now to Attend the 2007 Student Leadership Conference

Now is the time to register to attend the 2007 National Conference for College Women Student Leaders! The conference will take place June 7–9 at American University in Washington, D.C. As an AAUW student affiliate, you have already identified yourself as a college women student leader, and we urge you to talk to your student affairs administrator or campus adviser as soon as possible about supporting your attendance at the conference. Attendees will have the opportunity to build leadership, advocacy, networking, financial management, and other skills.

Local Branches Should Encourage Student Affiliate Participation

The AAUW website provides eight bulleted points on why college women should join the organization. By creating a section on the website that targets students interested in participating in women’s equity issues, AAUW is actively fostering the next generation of female leaders in all areas of society. Women in the Ivory Tower: Women, Academia, and Pay

In an effort to draw attention to the significant gender gaps in many categories of faculty employment, the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) released, in October 2006, a report called AAUP Faculty Gender Equity Indicators 2006. Congress passed Title IX prohibiting sex discrimination in education in 1972, yet women today hold only 24 percent of full professor positions in the United States, despite the overwhelming presence of women students on college and university campuses for the past 25 years.

Planning for an Economically Secure Future: 2006–07 Campus Action Projects

The Campus Action Project is one of AAUW’s major programs. The CAP program promotes student leader development and also supports innovative projects or programs that can be replicated. This year’s CAP program is focused on projects that promote awareness of women’s economic security. The selected teams come from across the nation and also include a team from Guam, supported by AAUW of Guam. These teams have developed and implemented a wide range of exciting projects that include conferences, art competitions and exhibits, mentoring, and research.

An Interview with Mary Saunders

Major General Mary Saunders retired from the United States Air Force in 2005. A 1970 graduate of Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in social work, Saunders also has a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.

A Mentor

My life dramatically improved the day I “obtained” a mentor. I was on a semester break and was seriously contemplating changing my major. However, as a 29-year-old returning student, I was just one semester away from graduation and felt pressure to finish and start working. In my heart, I knew I was on the wrong path.
