Decreasing Barriers, Planting SEEDS: Success in Education through understanding Equity and Diversity in Students By: State University of New York College at Oneonta, Albany, NY
The ten student CAP team members (themselves from minority/low income households) produced a 35-minute documentary featuring interviews with students from the target population about issues and barriers they faced in attending college and how some of those barriers are overcome. The team created an accompanying toolkit with additional information about specific strategies for overcoming barriers.
They presented the video and toolkit at several campus events, including a faculty research show on campus. They were invited to show the documentary during the 2009-10 school year and staring in fall 2009, it will be systematically utilized with the assistance of the Office of Equity and Inclusion, The President’s Council on Diversity, and the Dept. of Human Ecology.
They presented their film at the AAUW New York State Convention in April 2009, too.
In the CAP team's final report, they stated that their primary goal had been to complete the video, which they very successfully accomplished. Additionally, they noted that approximately 250 people had viewed the video to date (June 2009) and many had reported a profound impact on their understanding of the barriers facing low-income and minority women on their campus.
