Campus Action Project Models: Multimedia

Several CAP teams have used multimedia to create and implement their projects. Documentaries, podcasts, and an interactive website are three examples of past projects that involved multimedia. The following are descriptions of these projects.

Dreams to Reality by Alfred University, 2008

The Alfred University CAP team created a student-produced and directed documentary highlighting the financial hopes, dreams, and realities of Alfred University alumni one and 10 years after graduation, to draw parallels to AAUW Educational Foundation research Behind the Pay Gap. The CAP team surveyed 186 alumni and used the qualitative and quantitative data in their documentary as well as camera interviews with fifteen current students and five alumni. The CAP team showed the 25-minute documentary a few times on campus, including at a premiere attended by over fifty people. The documentary was well received by students and was successful at raising awareness of the pay gap in a very personal way for students. In the near future, the documentary clip will be accessible from this web page.

Podcast Mentoring by Purdue University-Calumet, 2008

The Purdue University-Calumet CAP team produced a series of mentoring podcasts on the gender wage gap and remedies women can use to increase their earnings. The podcasts include instructional content on the causes and consequences of the wage gap and motivational narratives by successful professional women, especially Latinas. The podcasts address the direct need of the students, many of whom juggle classes with parenting and work responsibilities and cannot participate in traditional mentoring programs on campus. Additionally, the project places special emphasis on engaging and supporting Latinas who, on average, earn the lowest wages that region of northwest Indiana. In the near future, the podcasts will be accessible from this web page.

Women Helping Women Succeed by University of Maryland, Baltimore, 2007

Women Helping Women Succeed is a website created by the University of Maryland, Baltimore CAP team to meet the ongoing academic and career needs of women, including addressing the pay discrimination. On the website, students can empower themselves through mentoring, networking, and e-Learning resources dedicated to helping them achieve their academic, economic, and occupational goals — from undergraduate to graduate school and/or first career path. Some of the e-Learning courses offered include: "Building your support system," "Playing by the rules," and "Secrets of female leaders." Read the Women Helping Women Succeed brochure or visit the website for more information.
