The nomination period for 2007 has passed
The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund, a program of the AAUW Educational Foundation, is the largest legal fund in the nation working to combat sex discrimination in higher education through education and advocacy. Since 1981, LAF has helped individuals seek redress for various forms of sex discrimination, including pay inequity, unfair denials of tenure and promotion, and sexual harassment.
About the Award
The Speaking Out for Justice Award supports LAF's mission by recognizing a nationally prominent individual who has advocated for change on behalf of women and girls. The award honors an individual who raises national attention and awareness on issues that reflect the mission and work of LAF. An honorarium of $5,000 accompanies the award.
The Speaking Out for Justice Award is given biennially at the AAUW Convention. Please note that the honoree must be present at the June 2009 convention to accept the award and share brief remarks.
Award Criteria
The criteria for the award are as follows:
- The honoree has made a significant contribution to the betterment and well-being of women;
- The focus of her achievement shall agree with the AAUW mission and that of the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund;
- Through advocacy efforts, the honoree has demonstrated leadership and commitment to equity and to issues facing women and girls;
- The awardee must appear at the event where the award is presented;
- The honoree's work has gained national prominence;
- The awardee is expected to make further contributions to the lives of women and girls.

Nominations for candidates should address the following award objectives on a separate sheet of paper.
- Describe in detail the nominee's accomplishments, including community and/or volunteer involvement, leadership roles served, and other relevant information.
- Explain how the nominee's actions have brought about positive changes for women and girls, as stated in the AAUW mission statement (see below).
- Describe how the nominee meets the criteria for the Speaking Out for Justice Award.
Nominations
A sub-committee of the Program Committee shall review the nominations, including any that have been retained from previous years. The Program Committee shall determine a list of not more than four finalists and present recommendations to the Board for their May/June meeting. The Board shall determine a list of not more than four nominees, in order. The director of the Legal Advocacy Fund shall make the contacts with the nominees.
