Congressional Voting Record

Cover, Congressional Voting Record for the 110th Congress, First SessionHow do your senators and representatives vote?

AAUW’s congressional voting record informs AAUW members of positions taken by their senators and representatives on the Association’s federal legislative priorities. AAUW members have a long history of lobbying Congress and holding their legislators accountable for how they vote on AAUW priority issues.

The specific legislation included in this voting record for the First Session of the 110th Congress was selected on the basis of AAUW’s public policy priorities and principles as adopted by AAUW convention delegates in 2007.

This voting record provides information about how senators and representatives voted on AAUW’s issues including education, economic security, and civil rights.

Uses of the Voting Record

It is expected that Congress will consider AAUW’s priority issues during both sessions of the 109th Congress. By using the voting record, AAUW members and other concerned citizens can hold their senators and representatives accountable for how they vote on those issues.

Refer to the online voting record in AAUW's Two-Minute Activist for the current session's voting information. This information, coupled with past voting records of your members of Congress are perfect tools for candidate and issue forums in your community or at town meetings. The record can also be used when writing letters to the editor regarding a legislator’s support of or opposition to AAUW’s issues. Share the record with coalition partners, friends, family members, and prospective AAUW members. By taking these actions, you will help educate your community on the issues and on policy-makers’ records. The AAUW Voting Record is also given to every member of Congress.

Reading the Voting Record

A vote in accordance with AAUW’s position is a (+) vote; a vote contrary to AAUW’s position is a (–) vote. A blank indicates no vote was cast. The symbol (I) indicates the legislator was not in office at the time of the vote. Based on these votes, each legislator earns a percentage rating for support of AAUW priorities. This rating cannot indicate the full extent of a legislator’s support for or opposition to AAUW positions.
