AAUWKeep the Change until Women Have Read Change.

AAUW figured prominently in this year's Equal Pay Day coverage thanks to branches, which came up with clever ideas to capture the media's attention to our reputation as a tireless champion for pay equity. AAUW's work on Capitol Hill and our research on pay equity are widely respected and known. AAUW members are fighting in their communities for state and federal laws that would create a climate where wage discrimination is not tolerated.

Equal Pay Day Coverage

Equal Pay Day — the point at which a woman’s salary finally catches up to a man’s earnings from the previous year — may hold the mainstream media’s attention for just a little more 24 hours. At AAUW, the issue of pay equity is one of our Evergreen issues. AAUW has emerged once again as one of the go-to organizations on issues involving the wage gap. For Equal Pay Day 2009, we furnished journalists with the latest statistics, put the issue of pay equity in context, and contributed op-eds supporting the Paycheck Fairness Act to newspapers around the country. Here is a round up of Equal Pay Day coverage:

Get the Facts

According to new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2007 the ratio of women's and men's median annual earnings reached almost 78 cents on the dollar for full-time year-round workers, up from just under 77 cents in 2006. This is the narrowest the wage gap has ever been, but it's only an additional one cent on the dollar. One cent is chump change. It isn't real change.
