AAUW Director of Public Policy to Testify in Congress

Hearing to Investigate Letter Fraud

WASHINGTON – Lisa Maatz, AAUW director of public policy and government relations, will testify in Congress at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, about the forging of AAUW's name in letters to congressional representatives. The hearing will be held by the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming in room 210 of the Cannon House Office Building. Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-MA) is chair of both the committee and the hearing investigating the fraudulent letters.

AAUW released a statement on August 6, 2009, when the organization learned that an agent of Bonner & Associates had forged AAUW's name in one or more letters to members of Congress. Bonner & Associates was working with the Hawthorn Group and the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity to further the coal industry's lobbying efforts against the Clean Energy and Security Act, also known as the "cap and trade" legislation.

Lisa Maatz is available for comment. To schedule an interview with AAUW’s top policy adviser, please contact Katherine Broendel at 202/728-7607 or broendelk@aauw.org.
