State Diversity Chair Position Description

Overview of the position: Promote and expand diversity and social justice initiatives in all aspects of AAUW and help AAUW further its diversity goals in the state. 

Overall responsibilities:

  • Assemble and convene a state diversity resource team to plan and implement diversity and social justice initiatives in the state. 

  • Evaluate previous state diversity and social justice efforts. 

  • Lead an assessment of the demographics in your state membership and the state at large.

  • Develop a diversity action plan with specific and measurable goals and objectives.

  • Ensure that diversity and social justice priorities are included in your state strategic plan.

  • Ensure that the diversity statement is printed in your materials.

  • Work with other state officers and committees to integrate diversity goals with other state priorities including membership, program, public policy and the Voter Education Campaign, LAF, Foundation, leadership, and visibility. 

  • Working with the state board, cultivate diverse leaders and devise alternate paths to leadership.

  • Work with other state chairs and committees to identify and address state diversity training needs.

  • Seek out opportunities to promote AAUW membership and programs to underrepresented groups and make connections with a broad range of potential coalition partners.

  • Ensure that your state budget includes funds for such expenses as sign-language interpreters and materials in braille, in large-print copies, and on cassette tapes.

Specific responsibilities to branches in your state: Maintain regular contact with your branch diversity chairs and support their diversity efforts. Share successful diversity and social justice strategies with branch diversity chairs. 

Specific responsibilities to the Association: Assist AAUW in achieving its diversity goals and adhere to AAUW's diversity statement and policies.

Specific leadership skills helpful to the position: Planning and goal setting, communications, team building, consensus building, new leadership trends and ways of leading, change management, mentoring, and cultural sensitivity and understanding.

Time commitments: Along with the time necessary to accomplish the above responsibilities, serve on the state board of directors and other committees as assigned. Attend state conventions and board meetings. Attendance at regional conferences and the AAUW national convention is strongly encouraged.
