Requisite skills and experience:
- Understanding of the necessity for ensuring the integrity of financial controls and reporting
- Competence in understanding financial markets and their application to non-profit organizations
- Knowledge of the financial regulatory environment
- Ability to explain detailed financial statements
- Understanding of financial best practices
- Service as financial officer of a non-profit organization
The responsibilities of all members of the AAUW Board of Directors are:
- Have an understanding of non-profit organizational governance and the role of the Board in implementing the associated best practices
- Attend all Board meetings and participate in AAUW events
- Determine the direction AAUW will take
- Develop and improve policies that implement and define that direction
- Identify and develop future AAUW leadership at all levels
- Represent members' interests
- Represent and promote AAUW to the membership and the public
- Monitor AAUW finance and insure sound fiscal management
- Support the work of the organization with a significant financial contribution
- Possess facility with computing and other technologies
The tasks that accomplish these responsibilities include:
- Participate in the development of a long range plan and in strategic planning
- Develop strategies to communicate the direction of the Association to the membership
- Approve the annual budget
- Review the financial statements on a regular basis
- Review the public policy program and approve the public policy priorities
- Recommend Bylaws changes and resolution proposals
- Seek out and encourage qualified members for appointed positions, particularly members from underrepresented groups
- Participate in planning and carrying out the Annual Meeting and biennial Convention.
- Participate in the meetings of the Board working groups
- Review and approve programs and issues
- Participate in leadership training opportunities
- Participate in the preparation of a biennial report to the Convention
- Maintain confidentiality of Executive Session
- Participate in the Board evaluation process
- Make appointments to AAUW committees
Specific responsibilities of the Finance Vice President:
- Perform the duties of President in all cases in which the President and Vice President are unable to serve
- Monitor the flow of AAUW funds and keep the Board informed
- Work with the Chief Financial Officer in the fiscal management of AAUW
- Participate actively in the development of the budget and dissemination of information needed by staff and Board to make financial decisions
Specific tasks:
- Through the Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer, oversee the collection of all dues and other monies of AAUW and make disbursements as directed by the AAUW Board of Directors
- Serve as custodian of the title deeds, business papers, and the bonds and other securities belonging to the AAUW; with the approval of the Board of Directors
- With approval of the Board of Directors make special arrangements with the recognized financial institution, or institutions, regarding investments in securities and their safekeeping
- Make an annual report to the Board
- Chair the Finance Committee
- Chair the Advisors of the Fellowships Funds
- Provide financial advice to states and branches upon request
