Branch Diversity Chair Position Description

Overview of the position: Promote and expand diversity and social justice initiatives in all aspects of AAUW and help AAUW further its diversity goals in the branch.

Overall responsibilities:

  • Recruit a branch diversity resource team to help plan and implement diversity and social justice initiatives in the branch. 

  • With your team, evaluate previous branch diversity and social justice efforts.

  • Lead an assessment of your branch's and community's demographic diversity.

  • Develop a diversity action plan with specific and measurable goals. 

  • Ensure that diversity and social justice priorities are included in your branch annual plan.

  • Ensure that the diversity statement is printed in your materials.

  • Work with other branch officers and committees to integrate diversity goals with other branch priorities.

  • Working with the branch board, help cultivate a diverse group of leaders. 

  • Work with other branch officers and committees to identify and address diversity training needs and resources.

  • Seek out opportunities to promote AAUW membership and programs to underrepresented groups and make connections with a broad range of potential coalition partners.

  • Ensure that at programs and events the branch provides special assistance such as sign-language interpreters and materials in braille, in large-print copies, or on cassette tapes.

Specific responsibilities to your state: Maintain regular contact with your state diversity chair and share successful branch diversity and social justice strategies. 

Specific responsibilities to the Association: Assist AAUW in achieving its diversity goals and adhere to AAUW's diversity statement and policies.

Specific leadership skills helpful to the position: Planning and goal setting, communications, team building, consensus building, new leadership trends and ways of leading, change management, mentoring, and cultural sensitivity and understanding.

Time commitments: Along with the time necessary to accomplish the above responsibilities, serve on the branch board of directors and other committees as assigned. Attendance at state conventions, regional conferences, and the AAUW national convention is encouraged.
