Requisite skills and experience:
- Previous service on the AAUW, Educational Foundation or LAF Boards and previous fundraising experience
- Previous service on a non-profit Board of Directors
- Capability of assisting President in coordinating special committees of the Board
- Ability to serve in the President’s stead when necessary
- Administrative abilities to coordinate work of the Board
- Oral and written communication skills
The responsibilities of all members of the AAUW Board of Directors include:
- Have an understanding of non-profit organizational governance and the role of the Board in implementing the associated best practices
- Attend all board meetings and participate in AAUW events
- Determine the direction AAUW will take
- Develop and approve policies that implement and define that direction
- Identify and develop future AAUW leadership at all levels
- Represent members' interests
- Represent and promote AAUW to the membership and the public
- Monitor AAUW finances and insure sound fiscal management
- Support the work of the organization with a significant financial contribution
- Possess facility with computing and other technologies
The vice president’s role in the tasks that accomplish these responsibilities include:
- Work with AAUW Board and staff in a manner consistent with the direction established by the AAUW President and the Executive Director
- Participate in the development of a long range plan and in strategic planning
- Develop strategies to communicate the direction of AAUW to the membership
- Approve the annual budget
- Review the financial statements on a regular basis
- Review and recommend the public policy program and priorities
- Recommend Bylaws changes and resolution proposals
- Seek out and encourage qualified members for appointed positions, particularly members from underrepresented groups
- Participate in planning and carrying out the Annual Meeting and biennial Convention
- Participate in the meetings of the Board working groups
- Review and approve programs and proposals before the Board
- Participate in leadership training opportunities
- Participate in the preparation of a biennial report to the Convention and submission of a written annual report to the Board
- Maintain confidentiality of Executive Session
- Participate in the Board evaluation process
- Make appointments to AAUW committees
Specific responsibilities:
- Perform the duties of the President when the President is unable to serve
- Program and development responsibilities:
- Plans with the staff, the ongoing fundraising efforts
- Plans, with the staff, strategies for fund development, potential sources of funding, and guidelines and criteria for fundraising recognition and incentives
- Participates with staff in the preparation of development materials
- Communicates where appropriate with state and branch fundraising chairs
- Oversees the various awards programs and panels
Specific tasks:
- Perform tasks and serve on committees as the President may request
- Report for the Executive Committee to the Board of Directors at Board meetings, at the direction of the President
