Requisite skills and experience:
- Previous service on the AAUW, Educational Foundation or Legal Advocacy Fund Boards
- Knowledge and experience regarding non-profit and volunteer organizations
- Understanding of fundraising methods
- Comprehension of the strategic value of information technology
- Proven public speaking ability
- Proficiency in written communication
- Understanding of Board member staff relationships
The responsibilities of all members of the AAUW Board of Directors are:
- Have an understanding of non-profit organizational governance and the role of the Board in implementing the associated best practices
- Attend all Board meetings and participate in AAUW events
- Determine the direction AAUW will take
- Develop and improve policies that implement and define that direction
- Identify and develop future AAUW leadership at all levels
- Represent members' interests
- Represent and promote AAUW to the membership and the public
- Monitor AAUW finance and insure sound fiscal management
- Support the work of the organization with a significant financial contribution
- Possess facility with computing and other technologies
The President's role in the tasks which accomplish these responsibilities include:
- Lead in the development of a long-range plan and in facilitating strategic planning
- Facilitate approval of the annual budget, review of the financial statements on a regular basis, review of the public policy program and approval of the public policy priorities, and recommendation of Bylaws changes and resolution proposals
- Work with Board and staff on recommendation of qualified members for appointive positions
- Approve, with the Board, the hiring of the Executive Director
- Plan and carry out the Annual Meeting and biennial Convention
- Take part in Board and committee meetings which review and approve of programs and issues
- Participate in leadership training opportunities
- Prepare a biennial report to the Convention and submission of a written annual report to the Board
- Maintain the confidentiality of the Executive Session
Specific responsibilities of the President:
- Represent AAUW and serve as spokesperson on issues and projects that will help promote AAUW's mission
- Work with other organizations to pursue common goals
- Encourage activities and projects at all levels that will advance equity for women and girls
Specific tasks of the President:
- Preside at all meetings of AAUW
- Chair meetings of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee, and serve as an ex officio member of all committees except the Nominating and Audit Committees.
- Advise the Executive Director
- Execute, with the Secretary of the corporation, all legal documents of AAUW.
- Appoint the chairs and members of such special committees as are approved by the Board of Directors
- Call special meetings as provided for in the Bylaws.
- Serve as a member of the Advisors of the Fellowships Fund
