Association Public Policy Committee Chair Position Description

The responsibilities of the chair include

  • Identify and develop future Association, Educational Foundation, and Legal Advocacy Fund leadership at all levels.
  • Represent members’ interests.
  • Represent and promote the Association, Educational Foundation, and Legal Advocacy Fund to the membership and the public.

The tasks that accomplish these responsibilities include but are not limited to

  • Work with the Association Board and staff in a manner consistent with the direction established by the Association president and the executive director.
  • Review and understand the Public Policy Program and priorities.
  • Recommend bylaws changes and resolution proposals.
  • Participate in the Leader on Loan Program and meetings/consult with members.
  • Seek and encourage qualified members for appointive positions, particularly members from underrepresented groups.
  • Participate in planning and carrying out the biennial convention.
  • Participate in committee meetings.
  • Review programs and issues.
  • Participate in leadership training opportunities.
  • Participate in the preparation of a biennial report convention and submission of a written annual report to the board.

Specific responsibilities include

  • Influence policy in accordance with the goals enumerated in the Public Policy Program.
  • Facilitate the involvement of members in public policy issues by providing them with relevant materials in a timely manner.
  • Propose the Public Policy Program for consideration and adoption on a biennial basis at convention.
  • Enhance the understanding of public policy issues among members and the general public.
  • Consult with and support state and branch public policy vice presidents.

Specific tasks include

  • Serve as chair of the Public Policy Committee.
  • Develop a procedure for drafting the Public Policy Program in consultation with the committee and staff.
  • Communicate with state and branch public policy chairs by letters, consultant calls, e-mail, and AAUW publications.
  • Serve on the Program Development Committee.
  • Select one Public Policy Committtee member to serve on the Committee on Resolutions.
  • Work with committee members and staff to plan public policy-related activities for the biennial convention.
  • Gather member input on future issues through the emerging issues process.
  • Recommend the adoption and termination of issues.
